Palms Garage Doors received a garage door opener repair request from a Santa Rosa, CA client. They said that their garage door had been opening and closing erratically for some time now. We dispatched a technician within the day, and he diagnosed the problem as a failing capacitor caused by a hairline fracture in a solder joint. The joint would disconnect with vibrations, causing the opener to malfunction during operation. Our technician repaired it by reflowing the solder and adding more to the fractured point. The homeowner was pleased to have a smoothly working garage door again.

Do you ever wonder why your garage door opener functions intermittently? If yes, it is not just you. For many homeowners, a garage door that sometimes fails to work is a recurring problem. And for the system to occasionally malfunction is normal, considering the garage door is one of the most used entrances in a home. However, even if you expect to experience some hiccups now and then, it is a good idea to be aware of the typical reasons so that you can troubleshoot the issue and hopefully fix it without calling for a professional garage door repair.

Why Does My Garage Door Opener Work Intermittently?

Radio interference from other devices prevents the opener from responding to the signal from the remote.

Interference from other electronic devices may be the problem if your garage door opener works intermittently. If the remote does not work when you are far from the motor unit, try testing it while standing close to see if the door opens consistently. If it does, then RF interference is likely the problem, and you will need to find and eliminate the source—security lights, ham radios, and some electronics. To do this, disconnect electrical power to suspected sources one at a time until the interference stops.

Check the antennae for debris or damage if your remote still does not work, even when near the opener. Sometimes, you may need to reconnect the signal between the remote and the garage opener. To do this, try reprogramming your garage door remote control to the opener by pressing the opener’s learn button.

The wiring on the wall-mounted door control and the safety sensor had become damaged or disconnected.

If your garage door opener is not working properly, the issue could be with the external wiring. First, check that the wires connecting the door control, safety sensor, and motor unit are securely attached. If any wires are cut or frayed, replace or repair the affected component immediately. Also, make sure that there are no loose or exposed wires anywhere. These steps will help keep your garage door opener working correctly and avoid costly repairs.

The garage door opener’s RPM sensor is malfunctioning.

If you have a chain drive opener, it has an RPM sensor that detects motor speed. The garage door will only move 6 to 8 inches at a time when the RPM sensor is malfunctioning, and the opener’s LED light will flash five times. If your garage door only moves in short increments of space and then locks, the RPM sensor or belt may be broken. If you have to wiggle the garage door to get it to close, it is time for a new chain and cable assembly.
